Handed down Revolver FFL question

My father owned a Single Action Army 44-40 revolver with an Ivory white pistol grip.

He passed away in 2005 and going through some of his belongings I found the Firearm.

My question is, what can I do to transfer the title of the Revolver to my name from his?

Also, if anyone would have a rough estimate on what a SAA 44-40 in good condition with Ivory grips might be worth that would be great!

I'm assuming there was no will. So my advice is to simply fill out a voluntary registration form: Firearm Ownership Record Fill it out and mail it to DOJ with a check for $19.

As far as value...it's hard to really give a good estimate without pics, serial number (for date of manufacture info) and if you have the box it is a plus. But conservatively...I can say in the ballpark of $1100-$1500

if it was made before 1899, then it would be considered an antique, and no need to be registered.

Very true...I also wanted to say there is a LOT of information which goes into the valuation of the firearm. So it should be brought to a competent gunsmith for a once over and idea of the rating on the firearm. As I said, the value I gave is a conservative one...It could be worth a good deal more.

Thanks guys! I had a suspicion that we had a law against very old guns. I will go look at the Revolver and find the Serial # and production date, and then begin the DOJ process if needed!

Nope...as a matter of fact...the older the gun, the fewer laws there are.

Thats what I meant, sorry my wording was not that well thought out. Kinda like an older car that needs no smogging.
