DUI and Proof of ID

Interesting scenario came up today. A well known customer came in and wanted to buy a handgun. No problem.

When it came time to get copies of his ID and proof of residency, he gave me an old DL (expired in June) and a pink form. The pink for is a form the LEO issued him after arresting him for DUI this weekend. He has no passport or other photo ID. It seems they take your valid DL at the same time they put the cuffs on you.

Question: will the expired ID with the pink "administrative license" form suffice for my records with ATF and DOJ? It has his license # on the form and is obviously an "official" form but no picture. I can match the form to his identity with the old picture...

He went to DMV today to get a simple "ID" card and they told him 30-90 days to receive in the mail!

Any thoughts would be helpful....

Unfortunately, he has to wait until the ID comes...the expired ID doesn't exist in the eyes of DOJ...however, the pink form would work for secondary proof of residency

Only a valid CA ID, DL, or military ID with duty station orders are acceptable forms of ID. His paper license is unacceptable and in an audit you will be written up. Second of all, he most likely will be denied as a DMV Reject.

If you have already run the DROS, let him know you made a mistake and you must cancel the DROS. I would highly recommend you eat the $25 DROS fee and offer to refund the rest of his money or hold onto it until he gets it squared away.

Ok Thanks guys! It is interesting that they take his only form of ID away. How the heck is a guy supposed to even go to the bank to get cash without ID?

He can go and get a legal ID card from DMV

He did go to the DMV to get an ID card. They processed the request and told him to look in the mail....it will be to him within 90 days!

Most places will take other picture IDs. Unfortunately the state will only take three types of ID for firearms transactions. Hopefully this ID debacle will force them to realize that is unacceptable.

That's one reason I tell people to get a CA ID...if you lose your license, or get it taken...you become a non person...it's frustrating as hell.
