CA Roster of Handguns Approved for Sale Scenario

So, I've noticed that distributors seem to have low stock on "CA approved" handguns.
But they almost always have their counterparts that come with "hi-capacity" magazines available.
If I could convince a distributor to switch out the 10+ round magazines for 10 rounders, would it be legal to transfer the handgun in CA?

I guess the bottom line of what I am asking is this.
Say I have a customer who wants a Springfield XD Compact 45 (XD9645SP06)
I would like to get it from a distributor, but all they have is the XD9645HCSP06.
Are these the same model number (XD9645), but just a different item # on the package (HCSP06 vs SP06)?
How does the CA Roster apply?

When I worked for another retail store, this outfit used to do that for us, no problem. AFAIK, nothing has changed. As long as handgun is on the roster, good to go.

If the FFL has a high capacity magazine permit, the FFL can swap out the magazines as long as the firearm is on the list (exact model). The magazine can be sold out of state or to someone who is exempt. You don't need a middle man to do it unless the distributor is not willing to ship the firearm with the high capacity magazines.

You would have to check with respect to the model of the firearm. In some cases the number listed applies to the whole package and therefore would not be an issue, but the firearm could be considered different and have a different model, which would be a problem.

I order rostered handguns with large capacity magazines and then 10 round magazines separate all the time. When they arrive, I swap them out.

As kemasa said, just make sure they are indeed the same make and model as the ones on the list. Usually they are or this list is so vague it doesn't matter.

I have a whole ton of large capacity magazines laying around doing nothing with their lives. I ought to put them on Gunbroker.

That's hilarious. I thought I was the only one with a ginormous box of hi capacity mags.

Big box of large, high, standard, whatever mags here also. I also log them on my large cap log. I tell the buyer ahead of time if there is a difficulty getting the 10's and that they will receive the gun with only one 10 round mag no matter how many it comes with. I always figured that when I sell the mags to LE or out of state it would make up for the mag I had to add to the transaction. So far, it hasn't worked out. I guess I need to put a bunch on gunjoker also and recoup my investment. I'd be curious what other FFL's do to reconcile their mag investment.

              Sell them to LEO's ?

When I buy mine, all they ask for is a copy of my Dept ID and driver's license. Can this be done on line, or does it have to be in person? I've never found an on-line dealer to sell me hi-caps, and driving in to my local LE supplier is a pain in the rear sometimes.

              Just a thought.

Thanks for all the responses! I was hoping that was the case. Now I just need to find a distributor who will do this for me until I get my large cap permit resolved.

I only deal with one dealer that swaps them out for me. OMB Guns. Everyone else, they are not going to swap them. They are going to make you buy extras. All of my wholesalers let me buy extras and ship me large caps with the gun.
