    Background Check question

Typically how long does it take for an FFL to get replys to a persons background check? The reason I ask, is I just called the dealer that I purchased a fire through to make sure all is clear before I drive over tomorrow to pick up my purchase. My 10 day wait is up at 10:15 AM tomorrow. The person I spoke with stated that he could not check the status and "...people are denied the last second".

    True or false?

(I purchased a firearm last year and no problem, and don't expect any this time. Just curious about his statement).

    Thank you.

    Kyle

A denial/delay can come at any time...even after you pick up your firearm (in very rare instances). There is no way to check the status...if all goes well, the DOJ will never be heard from. They only notify the shop in cases of denial/delay.

There is a review selection for the DROS. Often within minutes the status on the DROS will show that the DOJ check has been done. There can be additional reasons why it will end up delayed or denied though, which can occur at any time.

That selection shows any notices as well.

Thank you for the responses. The gentleman I spoke with is correct then; generally the FFL does not hear from the DOJ unless there is a problem/question regarding the buyer. I guess I was under the false impression that the "basic" background check was not that involved, considering the states without the "cooling off period". Those states that allow "choose-pay-leave with purchases" do background checks too, don't they?

Also on another point, I understand losing the DROS fee should there be an unresolved denial. Do most FFL's charge a "restock fee" of x-%. This FFL does and I feel it is substantial, but it's their gun, their policy and my decision to buy or not.. Again just curious

        Again thanks

        Respectfully
        Kyle

The basic background check happens quickly, as I said. It can be checked to see that it was done.

Many FFLs charge a restock fee. You should know if you are not allowed to have a firearm.

I know for a fact I will never be denied. What are you so worried about?
