    Shipping with USPS & 03FFL

I want to send a handgun but UPS & FedEX want like $ 60 for the overnight service.

I have a 03FFL ( C&R ) and in looking at the USPS info, it says that to ship a handgun, both the shipper and receiver need to be "a manufacturer of firearms or a bona fide dealer in firearms".

Their definition : A manufacturer of firearms or a bona fide dealer in firearms is one duly licensed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), U.S. Department of the Treasury, under the Gun Control Act of 1968.

It seems an 03FFL would apply here. Anyone done this ? I've got one of the 03FFLs and it would be cool if I can use it for this.
Anyone press will hear the fat lady sing.

From what I understand you need an 01 FFL or better to use USPS for shipping handguns. 03 is not a dealer, but a licensed collector

You are probably right. It sounded too good to be true. I'll have to look at the license and see how it reads.

You must be a dealer or manufacture for USPS.

Everyone here is correct. Form 1508 is dealer/manufacturer. NOT collector. You're out of luck.

What about using a different shipping company, is there a particular reason he can't use any random overnight service(besides shippers policies)?

Legally, you can use any private common or contract carrier. But just about all of them except for UPS, FedEx Express and FedEx Ground either refuse to transport firearms or they are more expensive than the big 3.

Actually, for the most part, the big 3 are more expensive than their smaller counterparts for overnight(especially within the state). I know, because I run the San Diego branch of an overnight shipping company. What the general public does not realize is the "big 3" charge and absurd amount of money for relatively local shipments. I'd guess it would be about 15 bucks to ship a pistol size box anywhere in California/Arizona/Nevada overnight...with a scheduled pickup at your home or office, maybe a buck or two more for a rifle sized box.

I'll check Friday about our policy regarding shipping complete firearms and get back to you guys.

I'm not a vendor here which is why I don't advertise what we do...I'm not sure what the board policy is on this.

If somebody can point me to some PC/VC/etc on this it may help when I bring it up.

I believe UPS and FedEx are the only carriers that accept firearms...DHL used to, but I don't think they do any more. A "common or contract carrier" is all that is stated in the law.

DHL no longer accepts shipments between two U.S. addresses. They are an international only shipping service. The German post office, Deutsche Post, lost billions of dollars trying to upgrade DHL to compete against UPS and FedEx in the U.S. domestic market before giving up.

There are still a few DHL vans driving around handling the international shipments. But here in San Francisco all of the burning man/hippie types are driving around in slightly used yellow panel trucks with the DHL stickers removed and "art" painted on the sides.

For example: the part of the March reserve airport they bought and developed, only to walk away.
