So a few years ago my wife's uncle gave me a Taurus model 66 revolver, I was just getting into firearms and he barely used it, he bought it in '89 so I doubt it was ever registered. I put this in a box and forgot about it. My uncle in law passed away. I never had a chance to register it under my name. What should / could I do?

You don't really need to do anything if you don't want to.So a few years ago my wife's uncle gave me a Taurus model 66 revolver, I was just getting into firearms and he barely used it, he bought it in '89 so I doubt it was ever registered. If you want to, you can file a voluntary registration form and mail it with a payment to DOJ. You do not necessarily have to do this, but if you want the firearm registered in your name it's the best route to take.

Yeah, if the transfer to you took place after 1991 then it was most likely an illegal transfer. But the statute of limitations on that illegal transfer would be up 1095 days (three years) after the transfer took place.
If CalDOJ contacts you after you send in the Voluntary Registration form (rare, but it happens) just explain to them that you inherited the handgun from a relative who passed away.__________________

A "few" years is actually about 20, right?
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.
