VolReg if you like, but long guns are not generally documented to the state, beyond the notation of the sale.

In future, be sure such gifts run through a CA FFL - paperless transactions have generally been forbidden since 1991.

So then it's not necesary for me to do so? I don't even know if it belonged to him or was just something he had laying around from God knows where. What if it was registered to someone else?

Legally, you should do a background check to make sure you are able to possess guns. For ATF trace data, it is probably already too late. Even then, when they show up on the previous owner's door, he might or might not remember who he sold it to.

If you didn't do a background check for it, no one would probably notice.

Thanks for the info gentlemen! As for being able to possess firearms, there's no problem there since I have multiple weapons that I have purchased and DROS'd.
