im selling a hand gun. it was a gift to me about 12 years ago. i never transfered it into my name. as far as i know, it has never been registered to anyone, but im not certain about that. it was from a family collection, and the owner passed away several years before his family gave it to me. so if it ever was registered, the guy is dead.

what exactly do i need to do to sell and transfer the gun legally? my plan was to either ship it to someone licensed to do the transfer or deliver it to the proper person. who can do the transfer, and how do i go about this, legally.

Just pretend like it is in your name and take it into a dealer as a private party transfer or ship it to a dealer if it is on the list of approved handguns for sale.

Even though you already screwed up and broke the law, the DOJ really doesn't care as long as the gun is registered to the new owner.
