adding additional long guns to an exisiting DROS?

    Hey folks,

I bought 2 long guns from Turners on Saturday 3rd and started the DROS process. I realized afterwards that I wanted another long gun but they were already closed so I couldnt go back that same day. I just wanted to know if its possible to add a 3rd long gun on Monday 5th without having to start a seperate DROS application because its still within the 10 day wait period?

Also I noticed on MY copy of the DROS application it only states "1(Firearm Quantity" under the "Transaction Information" section. Should this say "2(Firearm Quantity)" since I purchased two long guns from them? Hopefully it doesnt prevent me from picking up both firearms. And if this IS indeed a dealer error, maybe it will help me in adding that 3rd rifle I wanted without having to pay for another DROS.

What do you guys think? thanks in advance!

It is completely up to Turners. kemasa and I have argued this one to death. I think the penal code allows it, he doesn't think it does. So to make it simple, some dealers will, some won't. You will need to ask Turners.

some dealers will allow you to add long guns, other won't. There have been multi-page threads here aguing the exact wording on whether or not it is allowable.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Yea I figured it would come down to that. Ill have to call them monday when theyre open again. I did come across your thread while searching and it was so long and confusing I had to start my own lol.

I wonder though, how would it benefit a dealer by starting another DROS if it IS indeed legal to add to an existing? I know turners charges $5 for a "handling fee" but really? Starting another DROS just to make $5 seems ridiculous. I figured they would be making money by the fact that I would want to buy more right NOW than wait several months LATER when I feel like dishing out another $25 for DROS.

I'll let ya know how it goes on monday when I go in. Still Im curious to find out if they filled out my DROS incorrectly by stating I'm only buying 1 firearm instead of 2.

We had this exact issue come up a while ago, someone bought two lowers, the DROS was only run for one. I called the DOJ for guidance, and Dana McKinnion said to just cross out the 1 and make it a 2. Whether or not that's 100% legit I don't know, but he said it was cool and gave me his info to put on the DROS form.

If you make a mistake in entering the number of firearms, then you can correct it. That is not a big deal and in fact they should really fix the DROS entry to require you to actually enter something rather than defaulting to 1.

Yes, there has been quite a bit of discussion on this issue. It is not a single sale if it is done on a different day, but the odds of getting caught and charged is quite low.

Personally, a $5 "handling fee" is absurd. It is just an attempt to increase the profit and have fake lower prices.

I asked this exact question to the DOJ and was told you can change it as long as they are in the store, but if they leave and come back you must run another DROS. I had a customer that wanted me to add a long gun to a DROS when he picked up his gun, he told me some dealers allowed him to. That is why I called and asked, the biggest concern I had was proving the start of the waiting period.

So I had a chance to go in today and told the guy that helped me about the discrepancy and he said they caught it that night when the manager was going over the forms and they just crossed it out and marked it as 2. He said as long as it was done that night it would have been fine and even if it wasnt then they would have taken care of it for me since I already paid for it. Forgot to ask him whether or not I could add more to the form. My buddy wanted the same rifle so I told him about the one I wanted to get and had him pick that one. I dont own it but we go shooting together and we could always switch off and he said he'll trade it with me if I ever wanted it lol.

I guess the thinking of the DOJ is once a buyer leaves your store he could have done something to make himself or herself prohibited. Too bad you couldn't just ask them the four dros questions again and add the long gun to the existing dros and know you had all the bases covered. The chances of a new ten day background turning up something new be it 5 minutes or 9 days later are pretty small. IMHO

The law states that it has to be a single sale, loan or transfer. If you leave, it is no longer a single sale.

If the law was the way it should be, then you should be able to add any number of long guns before you pickup the firearms. Also, there should be no waiting period if you already own firearms. The reason for the waiting period is a joke to begin with. The list goes on. Laws are not what they should be and often don't make any sense.
