Do I really need to ship a rifle through FFL?

Driving up north to sell a rifle. Thought that maybe instead of driving I would just ship it. Called my local gun range to see what the deal is with shipping a long gun. They told me if it is going from CA to CA then it has to be sent through an FFL. Is this true? The fee they had was really high too, seems like a means of making money off of un-informed people. Anyways driving it will cost me the same as shipping it insured with UPS so I may as well take the trip with the GF. Just was wondering if this is FUD or not?

FUD. There is no legal requirement that you must ship it through an FFL, but only to an FFL.

And, within the state, you can ship it to a non FFL friend to loan it. Outside the state, you must ship it to an FFL unless you are shipping it to yourself for hunting or other lawful purpose, including moving.
