Types of "Proof of Residency"?

Hello. I am picking up my gun in 10 days from my FFL, but came to realize that most of the utility bills are in my wifes name. All except cable, cell phone, and alarm bills (which are all not accepted as POR).

I do have my name on the family car registration, but as the co-owner AND shows our old address where we no longer live.

Will this Car Registration be enough as Proof of Residency?

If your drivers license has your current address then the cable bill will work if it has the same address as the DL and 4473.

If your drivers license doesn't have your current address you need something issues by the state or feds that has your current address and your name on it. (car, boat, bike registration.) county tax assessments will work too.

I would suggest just calling up your FFL to see if they would accept any of those. If your car registration does not match what you put on the DROS, then I do not believe it is acceptable. You might have luck with the cable bill though as long as it matches what you have on DROS.

Edit: The FFL's i've been to usually ask me for my POR when I buy a gun, not after 10 days.

The cable bill DOES have my name on it, but my Driver's license DOES NOT have my current address. Therefore they do not match.

But doesn't the cable bill alone with my name on it demonstrate "Proof of Residency"?

I assume you are talking about picking up a handgun, not a long gun. If so, you must comply with CA's POR reg, http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/regs/chapter4.pdf , in order to pick it up. In addition, since your Identification does not have your current address, federal law requires you to provide some sort of .gov issued documentation to confirm your current address that you put on the 4473. Read the instructions for question 20.b. http://www.atf.gov/forms/download/atf-f-4473.pdf


If you are picking up a long gun, then don't worry about CA's POR, just the federal regs. yes, a cable bill with your name on it should satisty CA's POR regs, but you still need something from a .gov agency that document's your current address.

a dmv printout of your record works according to all my local FFL's... cost 5 bucks and u gotta go to the dmv which is a pain...

Go online and try to update your D/L and wait for it in the mail....rather than go to actual DMV....yeah I'd rather keep a gun in jail than deal with that place....

It enraged me several want a letter from my command and won't take MIL ID and orders. I consider it a letter from my mommy.
