Not Registered???

I have a friend whose boyfriend passed away recently and was asked if I would like to purchase his pistol, which she said was not registered to him and was not stolen. He was a former LEO, so who knows where he acquired this particular gun. I was curious as to how I can legally take possession of the pistol. Any input would be much appreciated.
