    SoCal FFL help urgently needed

Here's the background. I won an action on Gunbroker.com for a Springfield XD .45, and payment has been sent and received. All went smooth in the first part.

Here's the trouble. The weapon is not CA compliant (14 round mags - I knew this beforehand). No worries, I'll have the weapon shipped home, where I'm from - not CA - along with the ammo I purchased from the seller, and possibly deal with the CA issue at a later time - perhaps buy 10 round mags (if legal - resell the gun if not).

Well, perhaps you can imagine the trouble I've come into. Most carry the XD line, and most places refuse to do XD transfers - which baffles me as it seems they would still make marginal profit. For another day, perhaps. Anyway, I finally find one, great! They say to have the seller (an FFL licensee) ship the weapon with his info in the package, they don't send copies of their FFL.

The seller flips. Next thing I know, I have a missed call and two emails saying that it's not worth the hassle for him - and asking how I would like my refund. I DON'T WANT A REFUND!!

So, what's the deal? I've already paid him in full, including shipping. But the truth is that I'm unbelievably frustrated at this point, 1500 miles from any familiar FFL dealer, and it's my first weapons transfer. (Perhaps a standard rookie mistake.)

Long and short, can the XD be shipped to California, sans mags? And is there an FFL dealer here that would be willing to help a very frustrated and extremely grateful Calgunner with this process? The weapon and extras amount to a one-time deal, and I would hate to lose it.

For more details - or to help - feel free to PM me.

I can't help you because I'm in Northern CA, but if the pistol is on the roster it can ship with or without the mags. You will need a 10 round magazine at the point you receive the firearm if your dealer doesn't have any to complete the Safety Handling Demonstration. If it ships with the mags just tell your dealer that's receiving it to either keep the mags or to trade them out for you with 10 rounders that he may have in stock if they are willing. I'm sorry you've had such a frustrating process as your transfer should be a very basic process for any shop/transfer FFL.

As ugimports has stated. XD45 with 14 round mags are not a problem as long as the CA FFL has a Large Capacity Magazine Permit which I think most of us do.

If a buyer can't legally purchase the mags, I'll swap 'em out and sell the large caps to LE or an out of state person that can legally purchase them.

As far as the shipper needing a copy of the FFL, that is done all the time between FFL's. I email or fax mine to other FFLs along with my CFD (ca firearms dealer #) so the shipping FFL can obtain the required CFLC (CA Firearms License Check #) that will be needed by the receiving CA FFL.

This is all no big deal and can be handled by just about any CA FFL.

You need to have an FFL complete the sale in the state in which you reside. It sounds like you or the seller may be trying to make things more difficult than they need to be.

Unless the XD was some kinda' smokin' deal, you may just want to buy one here in CA as by the time an FFL adds his transfer fee to the dros, you may not be that much ahead. XD's with the correct mags are a simple commodity here. Just my .02...

FWIW, I'm also in Norcal, so probably not much help on this one.

So the shipping FFL does not include a copy of their FFL. That is a problem not only for the receiving FFL but for the sending FFL as well.

The receiving FFL won't fax or mail a copy to the sending FFL.

I'm not sure how the receiving FFL gets any transfers or purchases done if he doesn't do that. Is this a new FFL?

Ok, well if you still want to use this transfer FFL I guess the selling FFL could use https://www.atfonline.gov/fflezcheck/ to verify the FFL of the transfer FFL as long as he has the first 3, last 5 standard of his FFL number. Of course the CFLC will still need to be done by the sending FFL.

Truth be known, any FFL can download the txt file for all FFL's and search it by name or address in word pad and obtain the complete FFL #. Not really a big deal. I know there are those FFL's that are afraid of somebody forging a copy of their FFL but to say you'll not fax or email to another FFL just doesn't make sense. Again, my .02.

I am in Simi Valley and can do the transfer for you. I have done a similar one before with an XD. I can accept the high capacity magazines with the firearm and ship them out of state (slight extra cost).

You have CA ID and all that, correct?

As long as the shipper provides the CFLC letter and you have proof of residency in CA, then everything should be find.
