Requirements for picking up a Long Gun

I'm new here, I hope I put this in the right area.

I just recently purchased a Daniel Defense M4. It is being shipped to an FFL obviously. The FFL told me I just had to have government issued ID to pick up the gun (a driver's license). I told him I have one but the address on it is not current. The FFL then stated I needed proof of residence for my current address (government issued ID with correct Address / Vehicle Registration with correct Address / or a utility bill with my name and the correct address on it)

I JUST moved to my new address. I have nothing besides the paper from the USPS stating I moved to this new address and that my mail will be forwarded. The FFL stated that this isn't enough.

I have a Passport also, will this be sufficient or will I need to prove I live where I live with a Passport also?

I thought because it is a Long Gun, I only need to prove WHO I am... not WHO I am and WHERE I live. Am I wrong?

I'm trying to avoid going to the DMV and battling to get a new ID with current address issued because that may take too much time. The FFL has stated they won't hold my gun for too long.

Any advice or help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anybody has any other ideas of what can and cannot be used as a valid ID please let me know.

    Thanks!

Currently there is a thread going with a very similar question here. There are some good links in there to answer your question. Proving where you live in your case is required by the ATF for Form 4473 and it called Alternate Documentation.

You have to find some government issued ID. Technically the Feds won't accept a utility bill in this case, but if your FFL takes it, that is on him.

I will accept a DMV printout as it is government issued and it has a date on it. So go down to the DMV, do your change of address, and specifically ask for a printout and make sure it has a date on it. It might cost you $5.

Be forewarned that my ATF auditors have stated the stamped brown cards are no longer valid either as anyone could write in that address. The computer printed version is the way to go.

Last time I was at the local DMV, I asked the guy if the address needs to be on the card before it gets the "stamp of approval". He said he does because that is the rule but he couldn't say that is what others would do.

Don't you have a rental agreement or a deed to show DMV? Can't you make appointments now so you don't have to stand in line? Maybe the budget cuts have decimated them. I moved out of CA in 1993. It was getting crazy out there.

By law, you are required to notify DMV of your change of address within 10 days. Since you need to do it anyway, why put it off.
