    Faxed CFLC Number Question

Anyone ever deal with faxed CFLC approval numbers, specifically are they in the format of ASxxxxxxxx? I know AIxxxxxxxx is the Internet layout but I've never dealt with a faxed one. OOS FFL just wrote the ASxxxxxxxx number on his FFL and he isn't available to confirm it (and neither is the DOJ apparently since they haven't returned my call).

    Any help here is appreciated.

    Nevermind

DOJ just called and confirmed ASxxxxxxxx is correct for faxed-type CFLC approval numbers.

Cool. I just learned something new. I would have wondered the same thing.
www.tenpercentfirearms.com was open from 2005 until 2018. I now own Westside Arms.

Who is liable for having the correct number though? The reason I'm asking is that I had an FFL provide me a number that looked wrong, but he's convinced is right. I recorded the number provided. Am I on the hook if he gave me a bogus number? He's been unresponsive to re-verify after initially giving me the number.

Kathy at DOJ was the one who returned my call. Apparently she can easlily verify the number because that is what she did for me.

Let me re-phrase my question. Is it up to each CA FFL to verify the CA DOJ number provided for any shipment received? Since I don't believe there's a requirement to do so (of course I'm probably wrong) am I expected to call the DOJ for every FSA number received? If not, in the case of an audit and they look at a shipment and say "that number is invalid" who is at fault?

Is it my fault the number I received is invalid since I didn't verify it with DOJ or is the sending FFL at fault because they gave me the wrong number?

In my scenario I contacted the sending party asking them to verify the number because it didn't look right to me, but they failed to respond. I called a couple times as well and left messages and received no response.

I just assumed the number they gave me was valid since I other then the way it "looked" I had no reason to believe otherwise. I also provided them instructions how to get setup with the CFLC site as well as offered to help them through the process.

How did it not look right? Was it obvious, like missing numbers, didn't start with AI102?

I don't believe you would be responsible for being provided with a false number unless it is obviously wrong. (That is why I called on the ASxxxxxxx number.) And, I really don't think the DOJ would appreciate dealers calling to verify every number.

It didn't start with AI102, the number he gave me was 43102320

It looked to me like it was supposed to be AI10232043, but i recorded it as AI43102320 since I assumed he just left off the letters..

For all I know the guy is dyslexic..

I wasn't sure what the numbers looked like, but since I described to the out of state dealer how to get signed up with the CFLC I assumed what he gave me was what it was. I didn't have any reason to believe he would give me the wrong number. In fact as stated above it looked like he just transposed a few numbers from what did look correct. Since he would never respond to any additional emails or get back to me I had no way to verify the number with the sending dealer. Hence why I'm curious if it was "my fault".

That one would be worth a call to the DOJ.

Here's my fear now though. I've already fully completed the transaction. What do I have to gain by getting clarification now vs. waiting during an audit?

Since the CFLC instructions don't specify the AI or AS pattern of numbers why would I assume the number I received was false?

I'm just trying to understand why I would want to bother CA DOJ at this point?

I would urge you FFL's to call and confirm every number, so that this silly program can die of its own weight!
