    Dealer FAQs

I believe I bought mine here but that was 5 yrs ago.

How can I get magnetic card swipe readers to use with PC(s) I have in my dealership/home?

You may obtain additional MagTek brand Magnetic Card Swipe readers [part number 21080201 (wedge) or 20140107 (USB)] by calling the manufacturer directly at 310-667-6410 or toll free at 800-421-5208 ext. 6609 and ask to speak with Mark Baker. You must inform the manufacturer that you intend to use the device with the California DOJ DROS Entry System. MagTek Magnetic Card Swipe readers are also available from retail outlets. To contact a retail dealer call Gemini Computers at 888-943-6464 and ask to speak with Uri Rozic. You must inform the dealer that you intend to use the device with the California DOJ DROS Entry System and need to purchase one of the MagTek Magnetic Card Swipe readers as noted above. Please note that Verizon Business is not liable for any issues related to the purchase of and/or operation of Magnetic Card Swipe readers.
I'd really like to get a POS keyboard with integrated reader but wouldn't know which one is correct.
    Jim

For the DROS app, I would pass on this. WHile it's a cool looking device the spec may stray too far from the path of what the DROS application can handle.

I had a different mag stripe reader before from Magtek (don't remember model) and it didn't read properly. That's when I got the one I'm using now which is model 21040108.

Purchased off Ebay because it was cheaper then going through the DOJ sources.

The only difference with mine and 21040107 is color.

I know this is an old thread, but in case other new FFLs are looking for a card reader, it appears that DOJ-BOF 4080 (Rev. 01/2012) has a typo that is a bit confusing. It shows (emphasis mine):

Personal Computer and Internet Access Requirements The Dealer Record of Sale (DROS) information that is submitted by licensed firearms dealers to DOJ to approve or deny the sale or transfer of firearms, must be submitted electronically via the Internet from the dealer's personal computer directly to DOJ. Therefore, all licensed firearms dealers must have a computer with Internet access. A printer, and magnetic card swipe reader are also required to complete the DROS transaction process. You may obtain MagTek brand Magnetic Card Swipe readers [part number 21080201 (wedge) or 20140107 (USB)] by calling the manufacturer directly at 1-310-667-6410 or toll free at 1-800-421-5208. You must inform the manufacturer that you intend to use the device with the California DOJ DROS Entry System. MagTek Magnetic Card Swipe readers are also available from retail outlets. To contact a retail dealer call Gemini Computers at 1-888-943-6464. You must inform the dealer that you intend to use the device with the California DOJ DROS Entry System and need to purchase one of the MagTek Magnetic Card Swipe readers as noted above
But as near as I can tell model number 20140107 never existed and what they meant instead was 21040107. According to the MagTek Technical Reference Manual @UGImports is right the only difference between 21040107 and 21040108 is color:

Since the 08 is readily available I'm going for it and hope it works.

We bought ours on ebay for about $15.00 and it works like a champ, most of the time, well half the time it works 100% of the time. Just type faster, and have one for your DOJ audit.
