Turn off the caps. All modern pistols have to go through a FFL in CA and if you have a FFL03 and COE you can it take home after the paper work is done. If you are a regular person you have to wait 10 days.

In CA, unless the handgun was made before 1899, it will need to be transfered through a FFL dealer.

Is that because most guns before that had no serial numbers?

I'm not sure about that but, the answer would be "NO". All guns made prior to 1899 are considered antiques and not regulated the same. Without a SN, it can be impossible to figure out the manufcturing date. Without solid proof of when it was made, one would have to err on the side of caution. Many many antique arms have SNs.

A 55-year-okd handgun is exempt from the Safe Handgun Roster but not DROS processing. If you are wanting to buy such a gun from a friend, you need to do a Private Party Transfer at an 01 FFL.
