    Purchasing a handgun

Can I purchase a hand gun from a private party (S&W Mdl 36 .38 Spl) with cash and register it at a later date with an FFL?

Only if you want to break the law.

With a few exceptions, firearms have to be transferred through a firearms dealer (PPT - Private Party Transfer). The fee is limited to $35 ($25 DROS, $10 FFL fee).

Assuming your reply, both parties need to be present for the transaction, correct?

In my experience the only reason why someone who is selling a firearm wouldn't want to do it legally through PPT is if they shouldn't have had the firearm to begin with. A felon or a stolen firearm, etc.

yes you can pay the guy for the gun and later have him bring the gun to your FFL for transfer. He would have to retain possession of the gun until the transfer. I would keep my money until I could transfer the gun

Both parties don't have to show up to the FFL at the same time. The seller can go in advance and leave the firearm and sign a DROS worksheet, like is done with a consignment for non-certified list firearms.
