    Shipping to ones self?

    Background:
Our oldest son is in the military (20 year AF) and is being stationed overseas again. He has long guns and some handguns that he cannot take with him. One of his sons is in college and the long guns can be "housed" at the college armory, but not the hand guns. Considering his military assignments, he has maintained our home address in California as his "mailing addresss" for important mail such as voting ballots, drivers license, etc. which we forward.

    Question:
If he ships his hand gun to us, his parents, which is also a valid address for him, can he ship the firearm to himself? Since there is no transfer of title, no loan, or usage by anyone, other than storage until he returns Stateside, must he go through a FFL in his present location to a FFL here in N. San Diego Co.? In essence he is shipping to himself. (Since he is no longer in Korea, I assume he has access to a FFL, at least until the end of this month)

I did searches, but none appeared to apply directly to the question. Thank you for any insight.

    Where are the handguns now?

    The ATF says this:

A person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner. Persons other than the owner should not open the package and take possession of the firearm.

Sounds to me like he could ship them to himself, but the box would have to remain unopened.

He can send them to himself UPS or Fedex. UPS will let you send them second day air which is the cheapest way. You really shouldn't do anything but store them in the unopened box until he gets back. IMO.
