AOW build still ok in CA?

    Hello all,

A few years ago I bought a Remington 870 as a factory pistol grip (no buttstock) so I could build an AOW like a Serbu Super Shorty. However, time got in the way and I never started the project.

When I initially bough the gun I made sure it was a factory P-grip (no stock), and I was planning to create a Gun Trust to make the process smoother.

I still want to move forward with the project but I cannot find any recent info on how to make it happen. With all the changes in the law, is making an AOW 12 gauge pump gun still legal?

If so, I will be looking for a gunsmith or dealer that can help me through the process? Of course I would be willing to pay for the help. Any recommendations?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

None of the changes to CA laws within the last two decades have affected the legality of a manually operated Title 2 AOW in CA.

As long as you obtained BATFE approval to make a Title 2 AOW, it is CA legal to make and possess a manually operated Title 2 AOW in CA.
^Submit a ATF Form 1 to make a Title 2 AOW with $200 to BATFE NFA branch for approval.

Title 2 AOW are not exempt from CA assault weapons laws, so in order to be CA legal they must be configured in a manner that does not classify the firearm as an assault weapon under CA laws.
^This is something that only applies to semi-auto Title 2 AOW.

Once you obtain BATFE approval and your $200 tax stamp, it will then be legal to reduce the lengths of your Title 1 Other (Remington 870 PGO) to make it into a Title 2 AOW and then engrave your info on the Title 2 AOW.

      Fantastic, thank you.

Now, it's time to for me to figure out all the details.

There's at least one detailed thread on the process on this site.

          Sigstroker,

You are correct, however the thread that I found had conflicting info and I want to make sure I am doing everything correct/legal.

Figured I would ask about it in the FFL section because an FFL dealer (maybe not an FFL employee), would have a valid take on the legality.
