Report of Intra-Family Transfer (one year has passed)

Hi - hopefully someone has some input, and I hope this is the right place for this inquiry.

My son was active military, and a resident of Ohio. He completed his military service, came to California and became a California resident, and reported and registered his firearms.

He gave me one of his handguns and I submitted a Notice of Transfer BOF 4544A along with a copy of my ID and credentials, and a check for $19.

It was submitted in July 2022, and over a year has passed and the check was never cashed, and I never received anything from the DOJ.

I went to the website, submitted an inquiry that included the paperwork I sent in originally, and got a message back saying that it takes time.

Should I re-submit? What the heck happened? Why would it take so long?

    Thanks in advance.

Yep, it takes “time”. Don’t worry about it unless you’re trying to add it to your CCW.

      1. There is no legal requirement that CA DOJ BOF must send an acknowledgement letter to a person submitting a Report of Operation of Law or Intra-Familial Firearm Transaction. So, there is no mandated time period for them to send any paperwork back to the reporting party.

      2. Post-2020, CA DOJ BOF response time from sending an acknowledgement letter is between 6-24 months, after payment for the report is redeemed. If they are contacted before the 24 month window or before payment is redeemed/cashed in, then they will advise the reporting party that they are currently busy (workforce/personnel shortage) and to continue to wait for a response.

      3. Submitting reports via CFARS tend to be processed faster than submitting a paper report via mail.
In addition, post-2022, some paper reports/applications are no longer accept as a valid report/application and are destroyed when received, due to those types of reports/applications needing to be submitting online only via CFARS.

Of course, everything is crystal clear, right?

Here's another question. If I go to transfer the firearm to another party through an FFL in California, face to face, can the firearm be transferred? Will it pass?

Wow that's reassuring! I was concerned that, since the firearm is not actually and technically registered to me (yet????), a transfer would not be approved.

            Thanks, all, for the input!
