So I got a call today from my FFL saying my DROS was delayed, this is something that has never happened to me. I have purchase multiple firearms this year and several more over the past couple of years and never have had a delay. The last firearm that was delivered to me was on 7/05/2023 and I began dros for this handgun on 8/12/2023. Does anyone have a phone number? I could contact the DOJ at, I?ve sent them an email, but I?m just trying to figure out why my dros was delayed, any opinions, or suggestions would be appreciated. Obviously zero criminal background of any sort and my name is not super common but I do have two last names. My FFL has already told me if it is undetermined by the DOJ I would have to start a new dros and pay again. Something I?m trying to avoid.

Just wait it out, no big deal. Does the FFL you chose deliver on undetermined?

I appreciate it. My thing is, I’m trying to get to the bottom of this, I don’t want this to keep happening to me in the future, it’s never happened to me before , I own several firearms and don’t have a criminal history. Like what the heck DOJ.Comment

It can literally be anything. If it happens 3 more times get a livescan, but once could literally be your tech at DOJ got sick

The only time I had a delay, I found out that the NICS system was down on Day 9 of the 10-day waiting period, which was a Friday, when the investigator had finally gotten around to running the background check. So he slapped a 30-day delay on it, put the file on a shelf, and went home for the weekend. When they finally got around to running the NICS check again a week later, it went through and the gun was released to me. I haven’t been delayed since.Last edited by Mayor McRifle; 08-21-2023, 8:19 PM.Anchors Aweigh

That’s really funny you say that because I got the call from my FFL on day 9 as well. So maybe it’s a similar situation. The only time I had a delay, I found out that the NICS system was down on Day 9 of the 10-day waiting period, which was a Friday, when the investigator had finally gotten around to running the background check. They say they need 10 days to do the background check, but I think they typically don’t even get around to picking up the files until day 8 or 9. If your Day 9 was a Friday, it very well could be a similar situation. But regardless, a delay doesn’t necessarily mean it will keep happening again in the future. I’ve bought many guns since then with no problems.Last edited by Mayor McRifle; 08-22-2023, 5:47 AM.Anchors Aweigh

How and where did you get these details on what happened in your case? The only time I had a delay, I found out that the NICS system was down on Day 9 of the 10-day waiting period, which was a Friday, when the investigator had finally gotten around to running the background check. I called the DOJ and got someone on the phone. He pulled me up on the computer, saw the investigator’s name, and went over to find out what was going on. They re-ran the NICS while I waited on the phone, and then told me I was approved.
I just got lucky getting through to someone. I called the main number and left a voicemail message. Someone called me back while I was at work, but I couldn’t take the call. They left me a voicemail message saying to call back at the main number. I hit call back on my voicemail, thinking it would be the main number, but it was a desk number that someone had called me from. The guy who answered asked me how I got that number and I explained what happened. He was extremely helpful and started helping me out right then and there. I was approved about 10 or 15 minutes after I made that second call. Despite what everyone says about the California DOJ, the guy who helped me out was not the least bit anti gun owner. In hindsight, I wish I had saved that second number in case it ever happens again!
By the way, this was maybe 8 or 9 years ago. I’ve seen people here say that they haven’t even been able to find a voicemail to leave a message on, so I don’t even know if what I did is even possible now. But that’s what happened.Last edited by Mayor McRifle; 08-22-2023, 8:20 AM.Anchors Aweigh

Ask your FFL for a copy of the DROS they submitted for the purchase. If you have used them before with no issue, ask for a copy of a prior DROS which was done and completed with no issues. Compare the information. Your FFL may have accidentally entered one piece of information that was different from prior DROS that may have caused the delay. Check every box and line carefully.
FFL has option to deliver or not deliver upon an undetermined 30 day return.
It would not do any good to do another DROS after a 30 day undetermined with the same information. They call that INSANITY and a waste of your money.Comment
