    Handgun Shipping without Case

Is there any requirement that a handgun be shipped in a case? Example: FFL1 needs to ship a pistol to FFL2. The pistol does not have a case. Can it be shipped in a securely packaged/padded cardboard box? Would the receiving FFL typically have an issue with this?

The shipping FFL may require a case, mine doesn't.
I give them my pistol, they do the packing job, paperwork and shipping and I pay them. Since they do the packing they do a good job since any claims would be on them.
My FFL usually uses USPS and the package doesn't look any different from 1000's of other packages that the PO sends.

My FFL's receive pistols from private parties in cardboard boxes all the time. How do you think new guns and ammo arrive? The guns generally come in plain wrap, or USPS, cardboard boxes, the ammo has HAZMAT labels all over the box.

Thank you for the info. I assumed new guns arrive in manufacturer cases - mine always have. So, it’s great to hear it’s common to ship and receive them without a case.

I've bought more than a few new handguns that came in manufacturer cardboard boxes and that's all.

I've shipped a lot of handguns without a case. The only requirement is that the outside of the box can't indicate its a firearm.

As a pawn shop, it is rare for guns to come in cases. Most are bare, carried in a lockbox or gun case that the customer takes back home.

When we sell, they ship wrapped in bubble pack in a plain or USPS priority mail box.

But, to answer your question, there is no legal requirement to ship firearms in cases.
