You cannot bring what CA calls an 'assault weapon'. (Separating uppers and lowers on AR-types turns them 'not semiautomatic' so 'not assault weapons', but that's not really satisfactory long term.)

You cannot bring 'large-capacity magazines', 11 rounds or more.

You cannot bring full-auto, or short-barreled rifles/shotguns.

Excluding those, you file New Resident paperwork for all the guns you bring, one $19 fee for all of them in a submission.

CFARS - https://cfars.doj.ca.gov/login.do - is likely the method. No FFL required.

You have 60 days to register the firearms you plan to keep. If you plan to sell any before the 60 days, you will need your CA ID and I would not register those.

Thanks! I was reading another thread where there seemed to be some step about going to an FFL. It was likely related to the “selling” before registration. Got it.

Utilizing a CA FFL dealer applies if you are a CA resident that is importing firearms that you legally acquired while in another State. [PC 27585(a)]
^Such as... active duty Military that retain their CA residency and CA residents that also reside in another State.
