    Shipping handgun to FFL

I know this has been discussed before but I did not see a clear answer. I just wanted to know if anyone had used UPS since they changed their policy on private parties shipping to FFL? Also if anyone has an idea what FFL's usually charge to ship to another FFL. I have talked to Ship My Gun and they seem to think things are as they always were but would love to hear others experiences. My daughter is trying to ship from Oregon to here.

    Thanks

I don't think you are going to find a "typical" FFL charge for shipping a firearm. I think you'll find its all over the map. Your best bet is to ask around locally what a FFL will charge.

An FFL can ship handguns via USPS. I have usually found that I can ship a handgun USPS, including my fee, for less than a private party can ship it via UPS or FedEx (back when that was still possible). But it will depend on the individual FFL.

I don't have an answer for your question about UPS. I ship via USPS (handguns) or Federal Express (long guns). FedEx has a similar policy as UPS when it comes to shipping firearms. I don't do enough business to qualify with FedEx anymore under their new policy and may have to switch to shipping everything USPS.

Use that as a base for finding an FFL and their fees. Of course, call them to confirm prices.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

Yeah thanks I have a couple emails out but no one has replied yet. Yeah I asked Ship My Gun if anything had changed and they said no but when I asked about UPS's new policy they acted like they had never heard of it. I kind of doubt this. Also told by one FFL that it was nobody's business what was in the box and to just ship it but not going to risk my daughter getting into trouble or losing a gun.

I am sure I will find someone to ship it for me. This is getting to be a pain but everything gun related is anymore. Thanks again.

This is just my opinion so take it for what its worth.

Your daughter won't get into trouble unless she ships it USPS which is illegal. There is nothing illegal about a private party shipping a handgun via UPS or FedEx. There are legal requirements (it has to go overnight or two day - can't remember which). In fact its specifically allowed by law. These restrictions are strictly policy matters for UPS and FedEx. The potential problem is if its lost or damaged during shipment. Will UPS or FedEx make good on the insurance? Probably not.

That is one thing about Ship My Gun you can buy insurance through them and they will make it right supposedly. This may be the way I head but would feel better if I can get a dealer to ship it for me.

Reading some reviews online it sounds like because Ship My Gun is a division of Bud's Gun Shop, that they may be considered a FFL by UPS. One guy stated that he had some problems but got it sorted and UPS said it was okay to ship. So may still go that way. I can't see why they have not updated their website if it is a big issue.

FYI, there is nothing in the law that says you have to disclose what is in your packaged. I have on occasion shipped (UPS & FedEx) "fabricated metal parts" and insured appropriately. All legal.

LOL. I once shipped a pair of Ruger Old Army revolvers in a wooden display case. The insurance value was so high I had to ship in person - the online system would not accept it. At the store they needed to know how to characterize the package. They are not firearms and I knew if I told them they were it would have caused issues - I was shipping Ground, not 2 day. We tried "Antiques and Collectables" but that didn't work - they did not allow an insurance value that high. I tried "Tools" and it worked. I'm glad I didn't have to try and collect on insurance; but if I did, I would have argued that I described it accurately. It is a tool and it is not a firearm as per ATF.

Before I knew UPS would only accept guns at their main warehouse I tried to ship a coach length shotgun at my local UPS Store. It didn't look like a gun but since it was addressed to a gun store they asked if it was a gun. I wasn't going to lie, so they said I had to take it to the UPS hub. I no longer put "Gun" in the address, even if its going to "Bubba's Gun Store", I'll address it to "Bubba's G Store", or just "Bubba's Store". The law says not to include anything on the outside of the package that indicates its a gun -- so I don't ;-)

I'm not encouraging anyone to ship a gun via FedEx or UPS. I do think there are insurance issues if you do. But if you are going to take that risk, don't put "Gun Store"" in the address.
