03FFl loging of a siamese mauser

How does one log a firearm in their book when all the writing on it is in a language you don't read? Example, a Siamese Mauser rifle. Model number and serial number are in Thai. No import marks. Research shows the were built at The Koishikawa Arsenal in Japan, the model is a Model 44, later rechambered and then called Model 44/66.

So what exactly does one put for manufacture/model/serial number?

Google Translate? Or copy carefully. Thai is a beautiful language.

Seems like you already know the Make and Model. And if you aren't really certain of the manufacturer company, it's enough to just put the Country. Only other thing is the serial number. ATF actually has some rule for that, comes up often enough on Mosins which some have Cyrillic letters in the serial. I don't actually know the rule/guidance off-hand, sorry. But it's out there.

I read that, but that has to do with importers importing such weapons. Alot of 100 year old guns have no import markings. I have no problem putting "No serial Number" for such guns. My question is that to be legal, am I obliged to translate the serial number or model number and make? Can I put "ร,ศ,๑๒๑" in my log books? I mean, if I have an inspection, and they want to compare a Siamese Mauser to my book logs, I bet the don't speak Thai, yet "ร,ศ,๑๒๑" is exactly what is on the rifle.

Just do the best you can at translation of the SN and list it.

You might also list.. (translated) next to the number in your book.

It's not a big deal, and as said above the current law applies to importers. Not collectors.

Back in the 50's and 60's many surplus firearms were imported without the original SN being translated into numbers we can understand.

I would list it as a "Siamese" Mauser, then list the model.

            It's not a big deal.
