Hi Fellow Calgunners & FFL's,
I wanted to preface this by saying I'm not upset or venting, just needed some insight from some fellow CG'ers who are an FFL. I've been a longtime member & buyer/seller here on CG, but this is my first time posting in a long time, and I just wanted to see if you could help me shed some light on a situation with a pickup on a PTP I performed on Friday, May 6th.
I'd purchased a 1911 from a fellow Calguns member, who also owns/has ownership in an FFL/gunsmith shop. I had reached out to him to purchase and we set the date/time and one of the other reps/owners at the shop were going to handle the PTP at his shop. Went in, checked out the gun, paid cash, smooth transaction.
They are closed Mondays, so instead of picking up on the 16th, the rep/other owner(?) at the shop said they'd see me Tuesday the 17th (11 days). One day isn't going to make/break anything, so no rush. In the meantime, I also had some ammo sent over from Buds (since they are a recommended FFL for shipments, and I figured I could kill two birds)...
I noticed that there were 3 attempted FedEx deliveries for the ammo, but FedEx kept saying the shop was closed, when in fact, it was during open hours. I was a little concerned about the ammo being shipped back, so I called the shop, and actually spoke to the member who sold me the 1911.
He let me know that they are currently undergoing a CA DOJ Audit, and that they had the doors closed during this time. I asked about picking up the 1911 I'd purchased on Tuesday the 16th, and he said they aren't currently doing any PTP or DROS pickups, and that the doors are going to be closed for ammo deliveries as well.
My question is (and thank you all for taking the time to read the background): do you guys know how long these audits take? I did let him know I'd planned my week around the trip -- I drove out about 20 miles to get it, and that I'm glad I called -- as no one called me to inform me that the appointment changed, but he sounded kind of indifferent about it, and the ammo delivery. I'm unfamiliar with DOJ audits, but know that in some industries, audits can last weeks/months. The way he made it sound is that he wouldn't be doing any pickups until the audit was over, but didn't seem like he wanted to furnish any other info.
I understand you all have a shop to run, and dealing with the DOJ (or any audit) can be nerve-wracking, or at the very least annoying. That said, a heads-up is always appreciated, as are any other details of when I could pick up/reschedule would've been cool... I tried asking, but the response I received was that it is all up in the air at this point.
So I'm just simply trying to figure out if I should contact Buds customer service to let them know what's occured and get that ammo sent back/routed to another FFL, as well as get a tiny bit of insight from fellow CG'ers who are FFL's as to how long DOJ audits generally last. I get that they all differ, but perhaps a few of you could chime in, and/or offer any advice -- it would be appreciated. Obviously everything is paid for in cash, so my end of the deal is done.
As a quick side-note, there are some reviews (and I take those with a grain of salt), where customers waited for items they'd brought in for work, or were promised a specific date for completion work prior to a hunting trip, etc... but those dates were never met. In fact, some of them complained about having to what I'm doing -- where they waited until the pickup date and then called, only to realize that work hadn't even begun as of yet. There are also a ton of great reviews as well (so again, a grain of salt), but it did raise my eyebrow enough to reach out to y'all to hopefully get some insight.
Lastly, do you know about DOJ audits ahead of time, or are they just surprise visits that they spring on you guys? Just trying to get a feel for whether this could've been avoided or whether they could've let me know ahead of time.
Thanks ahead of time and hope you & your respective families and businesses are all safe and sound at this time.
