Question about shipping a gun as a gunsmith

    Hello everyone,

I just recently got my FFL license to do gunsmithing work. As a licensee, am i able to ship handguns back to customers through USPS ? Im hearing that I can, but I want to make sure. I know customers cant send to me through USPS, but im seeing that as a licensee I can return it to them through USPS.

For ups, customers can only send using a hub center. Same goes for me correct ?

Same thing with FedEx, need to go to a fedex hub not a store.

    Thanks for your help everyone.

I'm not a gunsmith but I'm pretty sure you can ship via USPS as long as you have an FFL for your gunsmithing. However, I don't think you can ship directly back to your customer using USPS. Its my understanding both shipper and receiver must be FFLs to ship a handgun USPS. Refer to the language on PS1508 which you will need to submit when you ship a handgun USPS.

In my area, I can only ship firearms (long or hand) via UPS at their hub. UPS stores won't do it. I have heard from others that this varies by local.

In my experience Fed Ex will ship firearms from any of their FedEx centers. The only time I have to use their hub is if I'm shipping ammunition. I have heard that Fed Ex has or will stop allowing shipment of firearms, but that has not been my experience.

The only way you can use USPS is gunsmith to gunsmith. Otherwise it's Fed Ex or UPS.

You can ship long guns via USPS to non-licensees
You cannot ship hanguns via USPS to non-licensees

The exact same rules above apply to customers when shipping guns to you.

For Fedex and UPS, firearm shipments must be tendered to a driver or at a hub/customer counter

Fedex recently changed their firearms shipping policies to be FFL only. So now non-licensees can only ship handguns via UPS (for now, who knows if that will change).

Find out what is required to ship firearms and what licenses you need. Read our guidelines on shipping your gun, including what is prohibited and how to secure your firearm.
