    Renewal of COE Issues

    Hi There,
Hopefully someone has some insight for me.
I have been trying to renew my COE on the CFARS website, I have about 50 days before it expires.
I use the CFARS online renewal system and it asks for a Real ID upload. I have the Real ID and cannot find anywhere to upload this file. Real ID is not a selection on their drop down menu. I tried the upload drivers license and this did not suffice the CFARS website request.
My calls and email to coe@ ..... go unanswered and ignored.

    Any advice?
    thanks

Oddly enough, I emailed them a couple of weeks ago and also still haven't received an answer.

When you log into CFARS use COE and then the modified restricted information tab. It will take you to your personal info. There is a pull down menu of yes or no for a Real ID. Answer yes, and then on the bottom, upload your CADL, and save. I had to dit it several times for it to stick, then pay your $22 to renew your COE. My last one took almost 3 weeks to renew.

Thanks, it seems to have worked. I had to change my middle name initial to the full name for it to take the uploaded real ID CDL, it wanted to see something changed. It says that the change is pending. This should go through in a couple of weeks and then I can renew. I have 51 days left.
Thanks for your help on this

In my case I had submitted a Real ID when I obtained my COE. My renewal was coming up and I checked that field. I found the Real ID field to be blank, not = yes. So I submitted a change which was just to properly set the field to yes.

That took a week for the DOJ to complete. As soon as it was approved, I then saw the renewal link which was at 58 days for me. Don’t know if I would of seen the link at 60 days without the change.

But I did not have the renewal link at 60 days in my log in. I had sent the DOJ an email as well a couple of weeks earlier and never received a reply to the email. I assume one should see the renewal link right at 60 days.

So worst case the change cost me only two days. I have no idea why the field was blank, unless the field was added in the last year. But I probably would not of noticed it with out this post.

My current renewal status is “processing” after submitting the renewal and paying the $22 dollar fee. I will let folks know how long takes to for the renewal to be approved.

When I did mine last year....mine did not become available to renew until 57 or 58 days before....don't know why it was 2/3 days off....but I did it right away. Always best to do it as soon as the system lets you. As to the real ID, I did the same thing but I had to attach it again on my renewal application, to complete the application processing. I though since they already had it on my profile, why do I need to give it to them again. But it was just easier to do so, as I wanted my renewal processed as fast as possible. Same thing when I gave them my 03 FFL number....gave it to them again to make them happy

              Real ID Every Year

It's a pain, but you will need to submit your Real ID DL every year.

No idea why. They have it on file, know when it expires and surely could be notified if it were invalidated for some reason. But it's required every single time...

Don't forget you are talking about 2 of California's premier departments known for their superior public service and their willingness to work for the benefit of the people of California.

I don't question or wonder why when they ask for Real ID every year....I just upload it and wait for my renewal to be approved. Makes life much easier

                    Same here.
I uploaded my CDL back on Feb 8 when I started my renewal - Day 58
My FFL info has been on my profile since last year.
On Friday 3/11 I received notice that I needed to add my FFL license number or why I wanted a COE.
On Sunday I added my FFL number and expiration date and sent it back at them.
Yesterday, March 14, I received an email saying I needed to log into CFARs.
I did - it was renewed after 34 day.

One note, the email said I could reply to COE by email...just provide my license info along with my full name and CDL. Yea, right!

If anybody does not realize it, normal email message are sent in clear text and spread upon the internet for anybody with the right tech to read. While not easy to reassemble the message, it is not that hard for certain groups looking for your information.

                        OT, but…

While sage advice, realize that it’s more often the case that the email is encrypted in transit, with unencrypted servers in the minority. The specification doesn’t force encryption, but every legitimate email provider, including the CA GOV is encrypted as long as your sending sever supports it.

On my own personal servers, I refuse unencrypted connections and put in the “5.7.1” banner for the sender to enable encryption to send mail to my server, explicitly ignoring RFC 3207. In fact, RFC 8689 was authored (yet to be common), deprecating unencrypted connections.

What is more problematic is that once the data is on the remote server, who has access to it.

Source: I run my own mail servers, and mail servers for my clients.
