Sig P556 Classic Question
I’m considering selling my Sig P556 Classic pistol with 10” barrel. Purchased new in 2012. My question is can this firearms be legally private party transferred as is or must I add some sort of mag lock to comply legally.
For a layman like myself the current laws are quite confusing. If the firearm does not have a fixed magazine, then it's considered an illegal assault weapon and illegal to possess in CA [PC 30605(a)] and illegal to advertise for sale in CA [PC 30600(a)].
If the firearm has a "bullet button" style magazine release, then it was required to be registered as an assault weapon before 07-01-2018 or made into a non-assault weapon configuration (fixed magazine or disassembled parts).
If has a "bullet button" style magazine release and it was not registered as an assault weapon before 07-01-2018, then it's illegal to possess in CA [PC 30605(a)] and illegal to advertise for sale in CA [PC 30600(a)].
If it has a "bullet button" style magazine release and it was registered as an assault weapon before 07-01-2018, then it can legally be possessed by the registered owner in CA [PC 30680 & 30945] and can only be legally sold in CA to a CA FFL dealer with an assault weapons permit [PC 30910] and it is illegal to advertise it for sale in CA [PC 30600(a)].
If it is in a non-assault weapon configuration, then it can be legally possessed in CA and legally advertised for sale in CA and legally transferred through a CA FFL dealer.
Non-assault weapon configuration means one of the following:
A. Disassembled parts.
^Only the receiver is transferred through a FFL and the other parts are transferred directly to the transferee, who is then responsible for keeping it in a CA legal configuration.
B. Semi-auto pistol with a fixed 10 round magazine.
^It is modified so that it has a 10 or less round magazine that is contained in the firearm and can not be removed without disassembling the firearm's action or that is permanently attached in the firearm's magazine well.
C. Manually operated repeating pistol.
^It is modified so that it is no longer semi-auto and operates via a manually action. This can be done by plugging the gas port and removing the gas piston/tube.Last edited by Quiet; 01-19-2022, 6:42 PM.sigpic
