Home based FFL in Los angeles County uncorporated

    Hello,
I am thinking about buying some safes and starting a business where I do firearm transfers out of my home. What are is the process like?
What are some drawbacks? What do you guys think? I would probably charge around 75 per transfers. Appointment only.

If your residence is located in an area zoned for residential use, you can forget about, you're not going to be able to get the required license. Please refer to LACC section 7.46.060.

If your residence is in a commercially zoned area, you may have a chance.

Don't forget that you'll also need a $1,000,000.00 Insurance Policy, and that policy must also included the County of Los Angeles as an additional insured party. Please refer to LACC 7.46.070.

I looked into this about ten years ago.
To get your Federal dealer FFL in Los Angeles you will have to show your L.A. City location approval first.
L.A. does not want home FFLs.
They require an appropriate brick and mortar location open to the public for at least 30 hours a week (IIRC, might be more).
Location has to be approved and away from all parks, churches, playgrounds, schools (and bars haha).
Location has to have security against theft, fire protection, etc.
I would check with the city before pursuing much else.
L.A. feels that it has enough dealers already which is why whenever you hear of a new gun store it is not in L.A.

This all goes back many years to when Clinton killed off thousands of home FFLs nationwide.

      Unincorporated may be different.

He's talking about the County of Los Angeles, not City of Los Angeles. More doable, but still lots of hoops and roadblocks.

You'll need a business license start there. The ATF won't issue without one.

R3 Zoning will prevent you from obtaining the Business License needed to get the ATF license. Please check LACC 7.46.070. It's a "Show-Stopper".

It probably doesn't matter for the topic here, but in my case it was just the opposite. The agency that issues firearms business licenses (Sheriff Dept.) won't consider a firearms business license application unless you have an FFL. I had to get the FFL, then apply at the County. If the County had denied my business license, ATF would have then revoked my FFL. Seems bas-ackwards to me, but I guess they wanted all the necessary background checks done by ATF first.

I'm not in LA County so it may be different there.
