Changed my mind about social security number

I changed my mind about using my social security number on the 4473 form. I'm pretty sure I can't have the ffl remove my number while the 4473 is being approved. But is it possible to ask them at time of pick up. To delete it from the copy that they keep for there records? I know these guys keep a copy for like ever.

My very first gun purchase I used my ss number. Because I was afraid of getting denied for mistaken identity. But now I'm older and wiser and have different concerns about my info in the wrong hands. Way too much info on that form.
    Thanks

You can cross it out when you go back to pick it up and are resigning the 4473. I dont even know why they allowed you to put it. In my experience the ss# is never used in CA. I have not had a single reject or denial from CA DOJ result in them asking me for a customers ss to clear anything up. In other states I dont know if it could help. In CA it has no value from what I can tell.

So, one time and one time only I had DOJ call and ask me if the person had written down their SS# to help in a possible delay going to undetermined. It evidently cleared up that delay.

Bear in mind that the 4473's are retained my the dealer for a period of 20 years and go nowhere. After the 20 year retention the dealer has the option to send the to the ATF Atlanta data base entry system for final recording. So in essence, the insertion of you SS# is meaningless other than to (perhaps) verify an applicants information...and rarely at that.

There are actually much easier and more likely places for a bad guy to get your Social Security Number. But do what makes you happy.

Did you mean to say, "take pics of them and create a database"?

Nope. AFAIK ATF wants the paper.

Iirc, what I posted was exactly what the ATF was caught doing a few years back. Imo, they can't be trusted to "review" the records independently. Somebody should be watching them the entire time.

What if the guy's name is John Smith or John Williams?

I put my ssn on mine. I also monitor my credit info weekly. My number is out there in many places so one more time a month is not a biggy. I was also denied in 2001. After the appeals process including fingerprints, I now put my ssn. No issues since.

I'm not so worried about 'them' getting my SSN - you are right 'they' have it for sure and hackers can get it if they want to.

I'm worried about some bad actor that works at the store getting access to the paper files and casually walking off (or copying) with the pages.

I know, they are supposed to be secure but a thief is a thief and they will find a way to steal whenever they get a chance, especially in a busy store.
