Storage for prohibited person - Acquisition?

    Cannot find this by search.

We're an FFL asked to store firearms for a prohibited person. Do we need to acquire and re-DROS, or do they just go into the bound book and on form 992?

230 Miller Avenue; South San Francisco CA. We lost our lease and are closing down - so we cannot do FFL transfers or PPT at this time.

You do the form and log into your book. No acquisition in DES, DROS when the timeframe is up.

They do need to be redrosed just to clarify. Also make sure you prep them for a delay I was about 50/50 on delays for previously prohibited people.

I agree. Seems to me that someone who has gained the status of "prohibited" needs to have a complete background check prior to reacquiring firearms whether they once belonged to them or new purchases.
I would also get a copy of any court (or whatever document) order that vacates the "prohibited" status.

re-dros, yes, background check yes, court paperwork is helpful to keep with the packet also. Also the person should be given a copy of the 992 since the court will want to see that they've complied with the order. We just photocopy the one we send to the state and give it to the customer.

What are some situations that a person can become prohibited for a time frame that it makes more sense to pay a storage fee vrs. selling?

It's really all up to the owner and how he sees his/her chances for recovering his firearms.

Had a handgun that I took in while doing business in CA where the guy had a restraining order against him. Since I build custom bolt rifles I don’t have inventory on hand to worry about and kind of forgot about it. When I moved to NV and transferred my FFL this handgun was located again after two years in the safe. Tried to contact the guy to check his status with no luck. Had a LEO contact that works for Cal DOJ and gave him the serial number (Benefits of being a retired cop). Owner came back as prohibited, convicted felon, and DOJ had been looking for him and his guns, including the one I had. DOJ took a copy of my FFL and listed the firearm as recovered and surrendered to my FFL It was now mine free to do with it as I saw fit. I sold it. In my case having a contact at DOJ worked for me, needless to say this won’t work for most anyone else.
