    Gunsmith & FFL Question

I don't know how this is possible but it seems that no one in the Sherman Oaks city office can seem to tell me what the zoning requirements are the criteria for opening a gunsmith shop (business) in the SFV or the great Los Angeles area are.

Anyone have any idea? As in actual official requirements or know who to speak to or contact

    AFAIK...

The requirements are similar to being a CA FFL dealer, because you need to have a valid 01-FFL in order to be considered a "gunsmith" [PC 16630 and 18 USC 921(a)(11)(B)].

Business license also needs to be for repairing/maintaining firearms and not for dealing in firearms.

So far as I can tell "Sherman Oaks" is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles - LAPD and LAFD provide services.

Los Angeles City Planning seems the place to start - https://planning.lacity.org/zoning/existing-code

I can tell you that LA Municipal Code SEC. 12.05. “A1” AGRICULTURE ZONE. prohibits a gunsmith business in a residential zone.

SEC. 103.314. SELLERS OF FIREARMS. does not explicitly cover gunsmiths.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Now I'm trying to find out:

1.) Where are you allowed to have/maintain your place of business or shop as a Gunsmith in LA County/City.

2.) What are the requirements in terms of zoning, location, insurance, safes...etc.?
