    ATF Trace question

I got my first trace request about 5-6 years ago--knew right away it never came through me as it was an exotic pistol I'd never seen. When I called the ATF back the lady was very nonchalant and just said, "OK, thanks."

Fast forward to this week..get a trace request for a Glock 19..she gives me the serial number and approximate DROS date. I check my books and records--nothing. My question; have any of you gotten trace requests for guns that never went through your shop? Just trying to get my mind around how that happens.

I've only had the two requests in 8 years, not sure if that's high or low.

I have had two. One was an AR lower that never came through. The funny thing was I did receive 5 lowers around that time all with sequential numbers. The one they were looking for was way off. The company had gone out of business a few years before and there was no way for them to even go back and contact the company.

The other was from Buds guns and it was their screw up lucky I kept all paperwork. Customer ordered the gun, I get it and it’s damaged, send it back. About 5 years later get a trace looking for that gun. Call ATF back with the info and to let them know I had documentation of the return. You could hear in her voice like oh no not this again. Like she had seen this before with them. I then called Buds to let them know to expect a call back from ATF and they needed to recheck their records. Could never figure out how Buds resold the returned gun without logging it back in from me unless they had crappy records keeping.

These were the only two in almost 30 years. Everything else I had record for.

I had one lower that was supposedly shipped to me but I had never received. Lots of trace requests in 13 years. I would be concerned if is started getting more that I had no record of.

This can happen if you don't keep track of what you order and what you actually receive.
If you have an invoice and an item missing in the box due to theft or mistake in the warehouse and you miss it, their record shows they sent it to you. If you don't catch that missing item, you have no record of it coming in.

This has not happened to me because we match up all product with what was on the invoice however, I have been shorted guns and called the distributor to let them know i am missing a gun in the package.

If a box looks like it was tampered with in transit, stop and really inventory whats in the box and whats on the invoice.

It can also happen when high volume distributors or gun shops and their people don’t pay attention to what they are doing like in my Buds gun example.

I’ve had wrong guns shipped to me that I never ordered that the shipping FFL had no frigging idea until I called them with their screw up. Hey are you guys missing a S&W .357? So it’s not always the fault of the receiving FFL.

I've had two. Both times the guns did not come thru my store however the person in question lived near by. I suspect they may have been checking stores near the recipient since that would be the logical place to start if no other avenues were evident.
