according to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqXfRML-VK0, I can have a detachable magazine if I do these:
      1. get a thread protector
      2. get a grip wrap
      3. no telescoping stock
      4. no vertical forward grip

      is this correct?

          ah right, for rifles .
is there a specific barrel length that differentiates a pistol from a rifle?

In general, a pistol doesn't have a stock and has a barrel length less than 16-inches. A rifle has a stock. A firearm with a stock and a barrel shorter than 16-inches in length, is a short-barreled rifle.
