Novice FFL-01 Looking for Ammo Advice

Hey Fellow Dealers,

This may be a silly question. I am looking to stock ammunition and I'm having trouble how to find distributors or direct sales from ammo manufacturers. For instance, I checked Federal's website, and could not find an application to become a dealer. I also searched on CalGuns but didn't find much on how to get dealer priced ammo.

Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated!

It's been my experience you have to buy it from a distributor. Maybe Im wrong, we never dealt with ammo too much.

You can purchase directly from some ammo manufacturers and others only through distributors. Keep in mind it is not cheap to go directly to a manufacturer, I recently talked to name brand ammunition manufacturer about becoming a direct purchase dealer and the yearly minimum you had to order/purchase from them was 75K. Not to bad if you are moving a lot of ammo, but once I compared their direct prices they provided to me to my distributors I decided to stay with my distributors as they sold the same ammunition at a lower price.

I use GAS a lot, also look beyond the wholesale distributors, many times I can beat their prices by shopping around a little. Depends how you want to pay also, most distributors charge 3% card fee and charge shipping, If you use echeck and it gets put on back order then in a few months after you forgot you even order it it hits your bank or c/c however you payed. More often than not I use non wholesalers, even if I have to pay tax, I still get it faster and cheaper. I suggest shopping around ammo prices can fluctuate greatly.

I was shopping on MGE, Zanders, Davison's, and RSR. Most distributors are either OOS, or don't seem to ship to CA. MGE had some but it was $17.99 for a box of 20. Is it just hard to fine because there is high demand?

Ammoman.com and ammoboard.com, ( I believe sister company’s) may tell you they don’t ship to Ca. but they do, I think they changed things around and now have to call it in at least that’s what they told me when I got a response back that they don’t ship to Ca. and I told them I have ordered a lot of **** from them in the past. Yes hard to find because of demand right now.

Interesting, I see Turner's and some shops getting inventory. So am I still going about this wrong? I'm checking MGE, Zanders, Davidson's, and Lipsey's. I never see any Fiocchi, Federal, or CCI 9mm.

When I do see ammo in stock, it's from SGAmmo or PSA, which won't ship California. Anyone willing to divulge how I can order ammo properly? I think I'm doing this wrong, lol.

How big are you? Turners and Some shops getting inventory could be because 1) it was orders they had since February getting filled
2) they are part of larger buyer groups
3) they order direct from mfgs based on volume
or various other reasons..

I'm small and order from distributors. I've seen some ammo trickling in, but the last 9mm I've seen was in April. I was able to get a few cases of S&B, Winchester, and PMC (about 20k in total). If you're small like me...expect to wait..
