You love saying this to people.

OP, your friend could also do a basic eligibility check. Costs $19, only good for one purchase, and may take several days or longer to process.

^^ truth hurts some people. You want him to waste 19 bucks. If he volregs he pays 19 bucks once then 1 buck after that. Not 19 bucks every time he wants ammo.

Yea. If it were me, I wouldn't tell the state about any non-registered guns I own. So basic eligibility check each time, or buy a new gun.

Only have to register one or buy one. Why use the term guns.

Hah you noticed (LOL) I wish this would all go away. They won't even let visitors buy ammo.

You would think this is the case but its not. According to my DOJ Field Rep when I asked her the question; "When someone does a Basic Ammunition Check for $19, I know the check is "one use only", but the next time they buy ammo do they still need to use the Basic Check, or can they now use the Standard Check for $1?".

                          Her response was:

The Basic will need to be conducted every time. Once a person has current firearm ownership information in AFS and they are not prohibited. Then they can attempt the 1.00 check. Their ID information is required to be current as well. ID and Firearm information has to match.

So its $19 every time you want to buy ammo unless you register a gun, buy a new one, or obtain a COE. And by extension, if you move, you'll have to do it again.

I agree with your suggestion. He should just buy a new gun.

Hypothetical situation and related questions stemming from Nardo's DOJ Rep's response:

Customer arrives at the ammo counter of FFL where she has purchased a gun recently. Customer has funny name (like with a dash or weird punctuation etc.). Ammo counter clerk enters name on CA ID as it is correctly typed out on ID. It doesn't go through. Clerk asks customer, "Did they enter your name with the 'dash or weird punctuation etc.' thing when you bought your gun here or just put a space?"
                              She says, "I don't know."
He looks it up with the space and it goes through. The gun was sold with the space in the name, not the "dash or weird punctuation etc." thing as it is correctly typed out on the CA ID.
Since it went through with the space and all other info. is the same, clerk sells her ammo and tells her the story so that she knows for next time.

                              Questions:
                              1) Did the ammo counter clerk do anything wrong here?
1a) How about whoever filed the DROS at that FFL when firearm was sold?
                              2) Is the customer going to have trouble buying ammo somewhere else when she tells them to look up her name with a space instead of with the "dash or weird punctuation etc." that is listed on her CA ID?
2a) By repeating the story at another FFL, will she (the customer) get him (ammo clerk) and or his FFL into trouble, potentially?
