DROS a Russian Saiga sporter

I am trying to DROS an Izhmash IZ 132R Sporter and it’s being called out as an assault weapon even though it doesn’t appear to be (see https://www.atlanticfirearms.com/pro...7-rifle-iz-132)

Is this really an assault weapon? DOJ was here doing an audit and they looked at it and didn’t see any problems. It looks even less "evil" than the VEPR I DROS'd in 2018 -- and had to block the thumb hole.

It is absolutely not an assault weapon. Maybe they are confusing it for a SKS w/removable mag - which it is not. Similar to a SKS, but not a SKS.

These have been on CA store shelves for years before Obama banned the Russian stuff from import. I got one right after he did that. It was on my dealers shelf. I am converting it to AK mags as one of my Covid shelter in place projects.

When the dealer entered it into the DROS system, the top of the Pending screen had a message something like, "Assault Weapons cannot be transferred"

What exactly did they choose as the make/model?? I will try to find my old DROS.

Just found my DROS from July 2014:

Make RUSSIA
Model SAIGA
Caliber 762
Type RIFLE
Category SEMI AUTO
Color BLACK


Follow that and it should work.

I believe they tried: Make: Izhmash, Model: Saiga IZ 132R. I think he tried to look for Russia and they couldn't find it. Hundreds of countries, but Russia was missing. I hiss we'll try again tomorrow as Make: Izhmash, Model: IZ 132R

I think you have to pick RUSSIA for make and SAIGA for model. IIRC we have had threads about this, I will try and find one.

PS - Russia may not be in alphabetical order with all the other ‘R’ stuff

There are some Saiga firearms that are make/model banned as assault weapons.

make/model banned: [PC 30510 and 11 CCR 5499]
(importer) Kalashnikov USA (make) Izhmash (model) Saiga

Saigas imported by EAA and RAAC were determined to be not make/model banned, because the importer was not Kalashnikov USA.
The workaround was to input "Russia" or "Russian Federat" or the importer as the manufacturer instead of Izhmash.

It is just a word match which you have to figure out what words to avoid. There is one model which is banned, so if it matches, they claim it can't be transferred even though they know nothing about the specific model. If you could call, then you could get an answer as what to do, but ...

Russia is there.

Click on the Make, then type fairly quickly "russ" and it is will find it.

You have to put the importer as the make. There are lots of weapons that were added to the DROS system as “assault weapons” that are not. We have pointed this out but DES just shrugs their shoulders.

Looks like the trigger word was "Saiga" It DROS'd successfully as Manufacturer: Izhmash; Model: IZ 132R. The stamped importer is "FIME, Las Vegas Nevada" FIME also didn't show up. I guess we'll see what happens in 10-30 days (thanks CA DOJ).
