    Private Party Transfer (PPT)

I was wondering if an FFL will still have the original PPT paperwork for a transaction completed maybe 4-6 years ago? If not, how can you get a copy of the PPT paperwork to prove the weapon was transferred to someone?

Probably not the DROS is probably shredded by now. The 4473 will only have the purchasers info on it. You can always check. If it it in the current DES system they might be able to reprint it.

Can I ask them to reprint it or do I have to speak to Cal DOJ for the paperwork?

Was it a handgun? If so the DROS is in the state files forever or should be.
Long gun would be 2014 or later as I recall. There is a form to get a record of firearms DROS'ed to you
FFL might still have a bill of sale if they used them on PPT's

Unfortunately, the Federal 4473 may or may not have any indication that yours was a private party transaction.

You'd have to contact DOJ/Firearms Div. to see if they would provide you with a copy. Personally, I rather doubt it since they don't know really who you are.

I would contact the dealer who did the transfer and see if his Acquisition & Disposition book would show the PPT. Maybe he would provide you with a copy of that page...minus all the other entries.

They may have it.... or it may of been shredded. I would not give you copies of the buyers DROS or 4473 though.

Why would you ever need this?

I did the transfer of a rifle with a family member. He doesn’t have any record of the PPT paperwork and I’m not sure if a dealer would assist with getting proof of transfer or sale of firearm.

I am assuming you did a legal transfer through a reliable FFL.

Have your family member do the ownership check as stated above.

                (I'll check for the link.)

Why does he think he needs the PPT paperwork?

We did a PPT through a reliable FFL but the business has been sold/transferred three times. The dealer advised to me that each transaction that occurred only stays with that specific FFL. So they have no record. My family member is looking for proof of ownership. He most likely will have to contact Cal DOJ for proof of ownership of the firearm.

Why would you need it. Your family member not have to prove he owns the firearm legally. He can always pay 19 bucks and register it with cfars along with any other firearms he owns. I he has not done a dros ijn last couple yearsor done this then he may need to do this to buy ammo.
