    CFARS ammo purchase

Sorry if posted in wrong forum,

I tried buying ammo for the first time in about 6 years and got rejected for the standard check. I checked on the website and it said 1. No record on ARS, or 2. Info doesn't match. So my question is this I have purchased some handguns between 2011 and 2013 so I know I should be in the system. But I have sold them and no longer have them. Does DOJ kick me out of the AFS system because I no longer possess them?

    Pretty much, yes.

The standard check = checks if you have an active AFS record.

If you do not own any firearms, then you would not have any active AFS records.

The process for the voluntary AFS Personal Information Update on CFARS also requires you to have an active AFS record.

Thanks. I was thinking that was going to be the problem. Opinion on what is quicker adding a gun or just get a basic check?

American soldier by choice. Made in America by the Grace of God.

So, now it is ironic that the State whittles away at the right of its citizens to defend themselves from the possible oppression of their State.

One other thing to consider, the Basic check is "per purchase" (i seem to recall its good for 30 days but I can't confirm that). Registering a firearm is more expensive, but its forever. Some on this forum have suggested pawning and then redeeming a firearm as the easiest way to do that.

The Basic Check is only valid for one transaction, which needs to occur within 30 days of the Basic Check being completed. [11 CCR 4303(d)(1)]

            Basic Check...
            1. Person buys ammo and provides info to the CA ammo vendor/CA FFL dealer.
            2. CA ammo vendor/CA FFL dealer gives that person an Ammunition Transaction Number (ATN).
            3. That person then checks that ATN on CFARS to see when it passess.
4A. If it passess, that person goes back to the CA ammo vendor/CA FFL dealer and picks up the ammo they bought. This must be done within 30 days of the ATN being passed. If the person does not pick up within 30 days, then another Basic Check must be done.
4B. If it does not pass, CA DOJ will mail a rejection letter to that person within 4-64 weeks.
