So I'm probably wrong, but it was my understanding that I had until October of this year to continue to use my OLD license (NON-"federal limits apply" marking on license) just like I always used to, but I'm setting up a transfer for Sunday and I'm being told I need to bring my birth certificate with me unless I have a REAL ID. My BC is in storage and I wont have time to go dig it out before sunday, so I'm SOL if that's the case. What is required?

DL confusion for FTF transfer

10/01/2020 is the day, I believe. You can also bing a Passport or a Passport card. There is more info herehttps://oag.ca.gov/firearms -
Previous recent thread on same topic:
Should answer your question. Note: there can be a difference between what is legally required for "non-Federal limits apply" licenses and what an individual gun store may require for old style licenses as a matter of their personal store policy. If it is not a legal requirement, you may wish to ask another store about their policy in advance and PPT accordingly.Last edited by ARFrog; 01-16-2020, 8:04 PM.sigpic

It is not a legal requirement and October 2020 never had any bearing on it either. October 2020 has relevance to boarding aircraft or entering federal facilities, not buying & selling guns.Comment

FFLs have a wide variety of "opinions" in this regard to choose from. It's been that way since about 2018 when the three agencies involved with firearms and the Real ID thing (CADMV, CADOJ, and BATF) issued various directives based on various opinions, based on DMV claims that turned out to be completely baseless... it has to do with that "Federal Limits Apply" on non Real ID licenses - ATF is "Federal"... and so the FLA license has been ruled to be unacceptable (probably because they give 'em to ANYONE, citizen or not....)
IF the FFL says they will do it, that's all you need (along with the requested proofs of identity). Some will and many definitely won't, or require additional documentation (passport, Birth certificate, and a couple others I don't remember are "officially" acceptable per ATF/DOJ)
BE warned, if you're going in to get your Real ID, you have to have a CERTIFIED Birth Certificate. The one most all of us have had and used all our lives are usually NOT "certified", but are just hospital notifications, and no matter how old and obviously REAL they are, they won't fly.... I spent around $150 to get all of the ones for the family so we could be "Real" again....Comment
