So a "Basic" Ammo Eligibility Check doesn't put one into AFS?

I was under the impression that the $19.00 Basic Check would put you into the AFS. That going forward all one needed to do was the Standard check. I guess we were wrong. I spoke with D.O.J. and they said it was only good for one time ammo purchase if used withing the 30 day period after it was generated. Even my corporate guys are confused....is this accurate or was D.O.J. agent I spoke with incorrect? Thanks for any info...c good

As far as I ca read (10th grade level, thank you very much) the basic does not put you in the system. Time to buy a lower or cheap .22. That is the story I told my wife and we are all out of .30sp. Shot it all yesterday. It was the only cal ammo that I did not stock. Fell through the crack.

      AFAIK...

It does not create an AFS record and it is only valid for one ammo transaction.

        Hmm.

        Regs say
        (e) Upon the Department's completion of a Basic Ammunition Eligibility Check, the Department shall update the purchaser's or transferee's DES record.
Where, besides AFS, does a "DES record" go? (DES is DROS Entry System - I had forgotten that TLA)

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

That is what confused me also Librarian. But maybe it will not create a D.R.O.S....maybe it will just update an existing one. So if you are not in AFS through a previous D.R.O.S. it looks like the only way to do it would be buy a firearm as noted above? What a cluster truck....

Once the Basic check is complete, the DES record will be updated with the results in the vendor's DES, so the vendor can then deliver/not deliver. It's not worded very clearly.

Completion of a Basic eligibility check does not add a gun to AFS, nor does update any existing AFS entry. Completion of a Basic eligibility check does not clear the purchaser to do a Standard eligibility check moving forward.

That makes sense BagelBites......so if someone wants to be able to do the Standard eligibility checks going forward they need to register an existing firearm or go and purchase a firearm correct? Is there any other way to do it?

Yes, you can purchase a new gun, register a gun that you already own, or update your address for a gun that you already have in AFS, but have moved since the time of registration. The below thread might help you if you want to do that.

Surprisingly, the info you got from DOJ is correct.

Most of the time the CA D.O.J. has been pretty good. But......there are some people that clearly should not be working there. I often get the "Please Defer to your local Federal B.A.T.F.E representative".....Geee....Thanks....
