Question about paperwork after changing your first name

I was able to finally get a California Real ID, but I had to change my first name on my Social Security Card to be exact match on my full name on my Birth Certificate. This has now allowed me to update my previous Federal Limits Apply to a CA Real ID. Now my CA Real ID DL has a amended first name.

I have been going by my second name all through my life, omitting the first name that was on my birth certificate. My old Federal Limits Apply, CA DL had my second name as my first name as it matched my old SS card.

Anyway, all my previous applications of DROS and PPT went by my old first name. So now, my question is, when I apply to purchase a firearm or ammo and use my *new* first name, what are the issues I need to be aware of that might get me a denial during a DROS or PPT with the CADOJ? Everything else is the same, SS number, home address, phone number etc... Do I need to do update anything on the CADOJ website, or do anything else?

Thanks in advance for any insight on this matter!

DOJ uses your unique ID number for the background checks. You’ll be fine.

Ammo checks go by more than ID number. Once you get a new AFS record in with a new firearm purchase everything should match. I would expect an Ammo eligibility check to fail right now.

You may need to get a new FSC card as well since they do a name match on your FSC record when doing a firearm DROS. Now your names won't match so it won't let the firearm DROS continue.

Thank you about the insight! I missed the possible FSC name issue!

I had a similar issue with a name change to my Real ID, but it was my middle name. I had DROS'ed a firearm shortly before receiving the Real ID but my DL was older and did not have the FLA.

To test the ammo system, I brought my DROS and Real ID to LGS and bought ammo for the firearm I just purchased. I passed and paid the $1 fee even though I DROS'ed the firearm with my old name. This was in August 2019.

Thanks for the tip about the FSC. FSC has old name, Real ID has new name. Guess I'll have to buy another firearm to see if I need another FSC. Does FSC have a provision for a name change? My FSC doesn't expire until 2023.

It's a mystery what they are matching on and they don't tell us. It is clear that it is not JUST your CA DL/ID #.
