    Pawning a handgun

I'm in a temporary financial crunch, and I'm considering pawning a handgun. I've never used a pawn shop before, let alone for a firearm. Aside from repaying the loan, what is involved in getting my gun back?
When am I going to see Dragunov OLLs for sale??

Sorry to hear. Do you have anything else of value you can sell. Seems like to much trouble to pawn, pay another $25 and wait 10 days to get it back.

Probably not an issue in CA but in free states when you pawn a gun you have to do a 4473. A lot of guys find out they are prohibited when they try to pick up their pawned gun. Pawn anything else.

Good to know! Must be a requirement for just my local shop. Thanks for clarification!

Yep, they just want their 30 day fees or whatever.

FWIW I've pawned a couple for the purposes of cleaning up the SSE stuff that shows my HK45 as a .22 single shot or whatever it was. Some gun dealers can do it, mine did with no wait whatsoever other than the 10 day DROS of course. The local pawn shop's owner is a customer of mine and I did one there too, he just asked me to wait a week out of courtesy to him because he wasn't used to doing that kind of thing. No problem... But he said there was no specific law preventing doing it the same day, he was just afraid it "looked funny".

State law sets the interest rates for a pawn shop. The price is going to be the same in 1 day or 30. So whatever logic they're using is just plain dumb.

                      From the horse's mouth!

Yeah my guy just loaned me $50 on the gun and put in in the gun case in the safe. I came back a week later and we DROS'd it to get the caliber correct so I could put it on my CCW. I think he made all of about 10 bucks on the deal. I suppose if you extrapolate that 20% over a year it's pretty darn good though!

What I don't understand AC is this.

What's the logic of waiting a week to redeem the gun? Why not 10 days, or 14 or 120? We do plenty of pawns where the customers return the same day to pick up. Example, customer gets paid at work on Friday but needs gas money to get there in the AM, they drop off their item and pick it back up when they get off work. This happens all the time. There is no law stating ANY pawn has to sit for any minimum period of time, there are laws stating how long a customer has for the loan period but that has to do with the amount you can charge for interest. There are laws stating that a customer may be required to give up to 24 hour notice to redeem should the property be stored off site. There's also laws regarding the 10 day grace period when a customer does not pick up their pawn by the due date. But anything else is just the pawn shop being odd. My thinking is such, Why make the customer come in 3 times for something its a waste of my time and theirs. Write the pawn, receive in the DES as a pawn, then redeem the darn thing right after, do the DROS and 4473and see you in 10 days. Buys have to be held for 30 days on firearms only, but I cant see anything in the law saying pawns have to be.

                        It just seems silly.

My guy (7th St Pawn in Victorville) isn't a real "gun nut" and just isn't up on the nuances of the laws, in other words he's not a Calguns member. He's just real cautious and just doesn't want any hassles. He's a really good guy, he's the lowest price on everything concerning guns in the Victorville area and he's a zero drama transfer guy etc... As opposed to Turners a couple miles away. He said he would do it the same day if I really wanted to, I wan't in a hurry and letting it sit a few days was fine by me.

Here's his shop getting robbed two years ago, he's got the whole ordeal on video (can't put it on YT yet because the trial is ongoing). I've seen the video, it's a freaking full-on gun battle like you see in the movies. One of his guys took one in the bicep, both perps were shot but lived. Crazy stuff.
