    Roster Question

    First I have a FFL3/COE. Some background... I've been looking for a S&W 586 to fill in my collection with a couple of S&W 686's. When I look at the roster list I find 3..I think.. 586's. They are 4", 5", 6" barrels, and all are dash 7's or dash 8's. I run across an out of state 586 that is a nice Montana Commemorative 6", but no dash and made one year only in 1989. The question. Since the value is more than a late 586-8 due to the provenance, could I import it into CA legally even though it's not 50 years old?? And if so how would I go about doing a DROS to identify it as a collectable??? Any idea's.. advise.. thoughts??

      Check to see if it is listed as a C&R specifically.

        There are lots of S&W commemorative's listed as C&R, but nothing for the 586 or 686 for that matter. However on the regular roster there are a bunch of varitions for the 686... I think I'll contact the Gun Range and see if they would except a S&W commemorative from out of state and DROS it??. If not I'll just pass on this one...

            If you were located in Norcal (sacto) it might be an option to consider, but logistically it's not in the cards.

              There are others, including middleman FFLs, who can convert the firearm.

                It just sounds like a big hassle. I'm interested, but not that interested... If I can't find a local that will DROS it as a C&R, I'll probably pass... Maybe I'll let my brother in Montana go after it, and he can will it to me... :-)

                  But it isn't a C&R unless it is over 50 years old or specifically listed and since you said it isn't either, it would be illegal to transfer it as a C&R. The entry on the C&R list has to match, not just be somewhat similar.

                  It really isn't much of a hassle if you know how to do it. I suspect that there is someone near you who knows how to do it. The seller might be able to do it as well.

                    Even tho it doesn't appear in the list it still may qualify?? See 'B' below. It doesn't say anything about having to appear on a list.

                    To be recognized as C&R items, 478.11 specifies that firearms must fall within one of the following categories:

                    -Firearms which were manufactured at least 50 years prior to the current date, but not including replicas of such firearms;

                    -Firearms which are certified by the curator of a municipal, State, or Federal museum which exhibits firearms to be curios or relics of museum interest; and

                    -Any other firearms which derive a substantial part of their monetary value from the fact that they are novel, rare, bizarre, or because of their association with some historical figure, period, or event.

                      Yes, that is correct, but you must REQUEST that it be added to the list. 478.11 is the definition of terms, not defining it to be on the C&R list.

                            You could petition the ATF to add it to the curio list. You will need supporting evidence documenting its historic value, such as higher sales prices than the unmarked models.

                              I guess if I already owned it that would work, but this one's in an auction and closing soon, so not enough time... And it's not something you run into every day.... So it makes no sense to go thru all the effort and maybe never see another... I'll let some serious Colt collector jump thru the hoops.... :-)
