    Serial number question.

Several years ago I sent a Remington Model 7 that I had picked up in an auction with out it's bolt.. It was DROS'd, and I sent it back to the factory to have another bolt fitted. Rem. ended up replacing the entire barreled action with a new one, with a new serial number, and sent it back directly to my house. I made note of the new s/n in my log book, and never gave it another thought. It's a safe queen. Now in another thread a calgunner brought up the issue of receiver replacement and having to DROS the new serial number. What say you?? Should I let sleeping dogs lay.. Or??

Was it before or after the DROS required serial numbers of long guns?

It has been quite some time, but I think that a DROS wasn't required for long guns for sole proprietors, but this has since changed.

I can't remember?? I know when I filled out the 4473 at the auction house it, and another couple of rifles, required s/n's, and I had to wait the 10 days before picking them up. It was one of the first guns I'd bought in 40 years, and was what started the gun bug... again.. Probably 10 years ago?? Now that I think about it all I needed was my drivers license number for proof of ID.... I think?? If it did need to be re-DROS'd do you have any idea what would be needed to get'er done?? Besides the normal 'stuff' I'm thinking a work order from Remington that's probably buried in a file somewhere.. Thanks for the reply..

2014 is when serial numbers were required for a long gun DROS, so 10 years ago it would not have been required. I don't recall what the CA law was then in regards to such a situation for a long gun and it would be hard to figure that out.

In theory, you could take it to a dealer, but many might not want to deal with it because it would be coming from you and going to you. I am not sure if the voluntary reporting would work, due in part to the timeframe and where it came from.

If a trace was done for the firearm, it would show that it was delivered to you. Not sure if it is the correct decision, but the line about letting sleeping dogs lie comes to mind.
