Simpsons LTD said antique firearms had to go through the exporter so they can enter the exemption in AES. Borderview says the same. Anyone have experience with this? Can a non-exporter ship a antique out of country (Canada). Not worried about the legality of it when it gets there, have that covered. Just want to know if a exporter is required.

Check with Canadian Custom via the internet. I know when I hunted in Calgary there was a bunch of Canadian paperwork that was required. Plus the guns were sealed until got to where I was going.

WHAT’S CONTROLLED?

Most, but not all, items relating to firearms have some level of export / import controls. Generally, accessories that are not themselves parts – such as a rifle sling or cleaning kit – are not controlled. However nearly all gun parts, and certainly all guns and ammo require export licensing from the U.S. Even optical scopes are controlled for export to Canada under current law. Ammunition and its components are controlled, and Canada requires that ammo imported commercially be on the ‘List of Authorized Explosives’ with Natural Resources Canada.

And, all controlled items must be allowed for import into Canada and export from the United States. Both countries have their own requirements, and making the common but well-intentioned mistake of calling only the Canada Border Services Agency typically results in hearing only one side of the laws – the Canadian import requirements which by themselves are actually quite simple. Working with the right import/export agent, you can find out which items are allowed and disallowed – even with a Prohibited endorsement on your PAL, no new Prohib-class firearms or parts can be imported into Canada for collectors. And the U.S. government doesn’t allow export of items made in certain countries or with certain features – all of which a good agent can assess for your situation.

The buyers do their homework before they bid. Most of the international buyers know more about it than the seller does. I found if you use AES you can exempt the antique, but Im leaving AES up to the exporter because it is way to inclusive. The buyers usually already have whatever license they need, and have a gun dealer or whatever they call them lined up along with importers and all that. Its like California buyers, with all the laws they are usually semi experts by the time they have bought a couple. You live in such a restricted space, you learn the laws to enjoy your passion real quick.

This is why I was asking for someone with experience specifically, because antiques ARE exempted from the export laws, but you have to claim an exemption in AES and without knowing about AES your'e at a brick wall. So without knowing what AES is, no one can realy give me any input. I know that Canada laws are involved. I know that gun stuff is usually export controlled. None of that is what I was asking because that stuff is all very apparent. I am more asking about . Reading this without knowing much more about the full scope of things you would think its good to go ON THE US SIDE. But it still needs to go through AES to my understanding.
