Mossberg 590 Shockwave 18" CA Legal?

It looks like for 2019 Mossberg introduced a new version of the Shockwave that now has an 18" bbl, and an overall length greater than 26", so it skirts CAs SBS rules. Maybe an AOW?

Federally, it was legal without a stamp due to overall length (>26"), but for California it was an SBS due barrel length (14").

General requirements are 18" minimum barrel length, 26" minimum overall length. So its not aSBS to California.

The way it looks to me its no different than a cruiser. Its a firearm to the ATF but a shotgun in CA. Over 21 only (federal) I believe. So hunting license or Military wouldn't help in this case.

Only Federal restriction is a minor under 18 can't buy it. But it's legal for CA....18" barrel/26" overall.
EXCEPT, now an 18 year old in CA can't buy unless they have a valid hunting license. Otherwise 21.
Over 21 for a handgun both Fed and CA.

This talks about "pistol grips and shotguns" however, the shockwave style grip is still not considered to be a shotgun federally because its not designed to be fired from the shoulder. Just because you register it as a shotgun per CA standards, doesn't change the feds opinion.

Someone correct me if Im missing something here.

What is the process for purchasing a firearm in California?
◦Generally, all firearms purchases and transfers, including private party transactions and sales at gun shows, must be made through a California licensed dealer under the Dealer’s Record of Sale (DROS) process. California law imposes a 10-day waiting period before a firearm can be released to a purchaser or transferee. A person must be at least 18 years of age to purchase a rifle or shotgun. To purchase a handgun, a person must be at least 21 years of age. As part of the DROS process, the purchaser must present "clear evidence of identity and age" which is defined as a valid, non-expired California Driver's License or Identification Card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). A military identification accompanied by permanent duty station orders indicating a posting in California is also acceptable.

CA SB 1100 has just changed the law (this year) to now read 21(unless the 18 year old has a Hunting Lic.)

Well, just reread the Federal section and (not that I'd call it a pistol grip) that "firearm" does seem to apply, though I'd hate to shoot it with one hand as the Federal wording states.
