    transfer to father in CA

My son bought a AR receiver a few years back when he lived in CA. He now lives in Oregon and wants me to have it, I live in CA. He has made it featureless. I know it has to go to a FFL in CA but how does he get the gun out of his name. I see that CA has a no longer in possession form but it requires a CA drivers license and he has an Oregon license now.

    Thanks

The DROS to you will transfer it into your name.
His name will still be on the history, same as if he filled out the NLIP.

Thanks Cokebottle for the fast reply. I just remembered he bought it in 2010 so I don't think long guns had to be registered until Jan 1, 2014. So CA does not have his name tied to the firearm only on the 4473 would it be. Correct? Now the DROS would indeed tie it to me. Thanks again.

It wouldn't matter anyway, even the NLIP doesn't "unregister" it... it simply goes into the AFS record for that serial number.
If it ever turns up involved in a crime, they'll still want to talk to him to confirm the disposal.

The DROS transfers it to you, which would make you the first person they would come to, but even if he didn't transfer it to you, the cops would run the serial number, trace the original selling FFL, who would be able to identify the original purchaser, and they would talk to him.
